The three units in the fourth module focus on various aspects related to prevention and care for people living with HIV/Aids:
Strategies for HIV prevention:
The past often informs the future, therefore this units starts with a look at the history and challenges of HIV prevention, aiming to improve general knowledge around HIV prevention strategies in specific contexts. The content explores combination strategies and their advantages over single strategies. It focuses on how a behavioural, biometrical and structural approach can be used as a combination strategy.
Therapeutic management of HIV ─ adherence:
In this unit, students learn to differentiate between compliance, adherence and concordance. The content explores the scope and drivers of non-adherence, as well as strategies healthcare providers can use to encourage adherence. We take a deep dive into monitoring and evaluation methods that need to be implemented in the context of the limitations of HIV medication adherence strategies in order to effectively respond to the HIV positive community’s needs and challenges.
Pharmacovigilance in HIV and Aids ─ adverse drug reactions and monitoring:
This unit investigates the importance of pharmacovigilance to treatment, the scope of the challenge and current methods of carrying out pharmacovigilance in the context of HIV/Aids treatment. Students will gain a working understanding of common serious adverse drug reactions associated with antiretroviral therapy. They also learn about the major organs and body systems associated with medication toxicity as well as the accompanying signs and symptoms.
