Wanga Zembe-Mkabile, external lecturer

Wanga Zembe-Mkabile is responsible for teaching the HIV/Aids, migration and poverty study unit of the PgDip programme. She has been teaching this unit since 2021.

Wanga works as a senior specialist scientist at the Health Systems Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council, where she leads the social policy and health thematic area. She holds a master’s degree and a PhD in social policy from the University of Oxford in the UK. Wanga is passionate about research and teaching in social policy, insofar as this relates to the social determinants of health, including migration, poverty and inequality. She is a widely published, C-rated National Research Foundation researcher. Her research focuses on the potential role of social protection instruments in mediating the relationship between social health determinants and poor health and wellbeing outcomes.

Wanga is married and is a mother to seven children. Outside of work, she likes to read, watch true crime series and listen to podcasts.
