Webinars

The Africa Centre regularly presents webinars that speak to our context of
inclusive health management, especially in an African context.

30 March 2026: Gender inequality and care work: Developing a blueprint for Sub-Saharan Africa’s care economy

Women perform over 75% of unpaid care work globally. This unequal distribution perpetuates gender stereotypes, hinders girls’ and women’s empowerment and contributes to economic and social inequalities. The speakers explored the gender, labour and economic context and trends in care work in Sub-Saharan Africa, making a case for developing gender-responsive care policies.

26 November 2025: The intersections between livestock herding and indigenous health knowledge and management

Indigenous health and wellbeing knowledge systems and practices of herders (and the livestock they look after) is an important aspect of men’s health, and the beliefs, norms and practices shaping their sense of masculinity and socialisation from a tender age. This informs how they perceive and treat women, their health-seeking behaviour and cultural practices. How is climate change impacting the environment that sustains the livestock environment and how does this in turn affect Basotho men’s health, masculinity, women and the economy? In this webinar, scholars who are well-connected with livestock herders in Lesotho share their views and experiences.

7 November 2025: Recognition of indigenous health systems: Reimagining health governance through an inclusive and pluralistic lens

Recognising indigenous health systems (IHSs) as knowledge systems in their own right and empowering traditional health practitioners (THPs) to participate in health governance, research and public health programming is essential to sustaining the broader health ecosystem in South Africa. In this webinar, the panel of experts discussed how IHSs can be positioned as legitimate and indispensable components of South Africa’s evolving health architecture in a way that honours both ancestral wisdom and scientific innovation.

15 October 2025: Unpaid carework: Reality, research and practice
Exploring support, care and empowerment of family caregivers

Caregiving is an essential component of healthcare systems globally, especially for people with chronic conditions, disabilities or age-related degenerative illnesses. Caregivers provide indispensable services, yet their contributions often go unrecognised and the challenges they face are rarely addressed through formal policy structures. The webinar explored a world where every family caregiver receives support, care and empowerment to lead a healthy and fulfilling life.

2 October 2025: AI for inclusive and equitable health management in Africa

Participants explored how AI can advance equity in service delivery ─ improving diagnostics, supporting health workers, optimising resources and expanding access for marginalised groups ─ while also examining risks such as bias and data governance. The webinar brought together scholars and practitioners to highlight opportunities for African-led innovation, including building local data ecosystems, fostering homegrown startups and shaping ethical AI policies.
