Ethics are critical to quality research

Being “ethical” can easily become an empty buzzword to impress or tick a box. Yet, ethics is at the heart of our progress as humanity across all spheres of life. Dr Chioma Ohajunwa – who recently joined the Africa Centre as a lecturer – provided valuable practical pointers on the role of ethics in quality research in our MPhil workshop.

Here’s a recap of her key points:
  • Do no harm – to other humans, the earth, or the environment.
  • Make use of moral, just research practices that contribute to unique contexts and indigenous knowledge.
  • Be accountable as a researcher – check yourself as you go.
  • Learn from what was done wrong in the past and be scrupulous about high standards.
  • Encourage diversity and inclusivity by supporting rights for all.
