HIV/Aids efforts must be tailored to be effective

We’re honoured to have South Africa’s UNAIDS representative, Eva Kiwango, as the keynote speaker at our MPhil workshop. This morning she provided a detailed and sobering overview of the state of the HIV/Aids pandemic globally. While remarkable progress has been made in some regions, new infections, and Aids-related deaths are not declining fast enough.

Kiwango says entrenched inequalities are at the root of these challenges. If we want to see change – and this applies to dealing with future pandemics as well – critical elements of the global HIV/Aids strategy must be prioritised and sufficiently funded. If not, the price will be costly: around 7,7 million more lives lost to Aids in the next decade…
