1. Introduction
The Africa Centre for Inclusive Health Management, formerly the Africa Centre for HIV/Aids
Management, is located in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS), falling directly
1
under the dean and with representation on the faculty board. The Africa Centre is a type 2 centre,
allowing it significant autonomy to make decisions about its work. It is housed in its own building,
enhancing its distinctive identity and autonomy.
The Africa Centre started out as a project in the Department of Industrial Psychology. Its programmes
comprise the Postgraduate Diploma in HIV/Aids Management (PgDip), which was introduced in 2001,
and a Master’s in HIV/Aids Management (MPhil) that commenced in 2003. A PhD in HIV/Aids
Management (by dissertation only) was introduced in 2021 and had its first intake in 2022. Being a
type 2 centre, the Africa Centre does not offer undergraduate programmes, in accordance with the
university rules on academic entities. The Africa Centre is pleased to report to the EMS faculty on its
2024 activities and outputs.
2. Vision, mission and values
The Africa Centre’s vision is to be an inclusive, innovative, future-focused organisation that broadens
the skills of leaders, managers and communities in strengthening health systems towards universal
health coverage. It is focused on having staff and students who are socially responsive to significantly
reduce health inequalities and the impact of pandemics, HIV/Aids and other health conditions in
communities and in the broader health ecosystem.
The Africa Centre’s mission is to enhance applied and theoretical skills in inclusive health management
in health systems strengthening and HIV/Aids, as well as other health conditions in communities and
the broader health ecosystem by way of high-impact learning-teaching-assessment, research and
community interaction.
The Africa Centre is committed to the values of inclusivity, social justice, ubuntu, equity, excellence,
compassion, accountability and respect.
1 A type 2 academic entity reports to a single faculty, even if it sometimes involves collaboration between researchers from different faculties.
Such an entity can be established if its activities are significantly interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary and usually requires the involvement of
more than one academic department (or equivalent faculty-based structure). A type 2 entity may use the nomenclature of centre, institute
or school and has a primary link to a single host faculty.
