4. Key achievements in 2024
4.1 Name change and strategic direction
In 2024, the centre’s new name, the Africa Centre for Inclusive Health Management, was accepted by
the senate, reflecting its focus beyond HIV/Aids management to broader health systems strengthening
and inclusive health management. This strategic pivot aligns with the evolving health landscape in
Africa and the centre’s commitment to responding proactively to health system challenges.
4.2 Revitalising the PgDip in HIV/Aids Management
The PgDip retained its core focus on HIV/Aids management but developed an elective stream/focal
area on inclusive health management. This elective emphasises intersectionality, critical management
theory and systems thinking to equip health professionals with the tools to address broader health
system challenges. This update ensures relevance in the evolving field of public health while
addressing programmatic standards and enhancing student outcomes. The added focal area for the
PgDip will launch in 2026.
4.3 Introduction of short courses
The Africa Centre started the process of developing three targeted short courses to address emerging
needs in health systems management:
• Critical Management Practices in Advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC): Focused on
leadership and governance strategies to overcome systemic barriers to UHC.
• Inclusive Practices and Intersectionality in Health Outcomes Management: Addressing equity
challenges and fostering culturally sensitive health programmes.
• Digital Health and the Framework of Action for UHC: Exploring digital tools and socio-technical
solutions to improve healthcare delivery.
These courses align with the centre’s broader strategic goals and will be launched in 2025.
4.4 Responses to peer review recommendations
In 2024, the Africa Centre addressed key recommendations from the 2023 Peer Review, including:
• Expanding the focus beyond HIV/Aids to include broader health systems management.
• Increasing programme coherence by integrating transformative and critical management
pedagogy.
• Addressing the duration and structure of the PgDip to meet national academic standards.
